TYPHOON VONGFONG HIT THE PHILIPPINES

On 14^th May 2020, the Typhoon Vongfong, also known as Typhoon “Ambo”, hit the Philippines; precisely the typhoon struck eastern Samar at around noon local time on Thursday.

Vongfong brought winds gusting up to 190 kilometres per hour combined with heavy rains, causing widespread destruction and forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people in the country under lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the double threat of the storm and the virus, evacuation centres in central Philippines could accept only half of their capacity. The wave of people and the limited space led the authorities to ask numerous large churches in the area to shelter people fleeing from the typhoon, the first of the season.
