Windstorm "Paula": damage of millions of euros

The windstorm Paula raged in wide parts of Austria at the weekend from 26.01. to 27.01.2008. Temporarily more than 100.000 households had no electricity and lots of streets and railroad connections were blocked. There were winds with gusts up to 230 km/h in the mountains and the storm reached a top speed of 150 km/h in the lower land.

We expect the damage to amount to millions of euros, due to numerous destroyed roofs, overthrown trees, capped power supply lines and thereby forest and building fires. According to the first estimates the sum of the damage in Austria will be higher than the damage of storm "Kyrill" in January 2007.
