1st April 2014 – a 8.2 magnitude earthquake hits Chile

A first 8.2 magnitude earthquake affected the coast of Northern Chile in the evening of Tuesday 1st April 2014.

Several aftershocks followed and communications have been cut off in many of the affected areas.

Unfortunately, during the catastrophic event, 6 people lost their lives. In addition, more than 2,600 houses were damaged and fishing boats, along the northern coast, went destroyed.

The Tuesday quake verified at about 8:46 p.m. (local time), 95 km northwest of Iquique. The U.S. Geographical Survey reported it had a depth of 20 km below the sea level.

Chile National Emergency Office asked coastal residents to evacuate, as 1st April quake caused about 2.5 metres tsunami waves. In addition, a lot of people, after hearing of the tsunami warning, immediately fled for higher ground.

The Pacific Tsunami warning Center (Ptwc) issued several tsunami warnings, but cancelled all of them by early Wednesday.

Tsunami warnings, which initially extended as far north as Mexico Pacific coast, were called off as well.

Tsunami waves, higher than 2 metres and generated by the earthquake, washed ashore on the coast of Pisagua (about 1,800 km away from Santiago) flooding several buildings.

Chile is one of the most earthquake-prone areas of the world: in 1960 southern Chile was hit by a 9.5 quake, the largest in the modern history.
